The living room or hall is where the family gathers and guests are received. In Vastu, placing it in a positive zone and arranging seating well supports openness and harmony. This guide covers ideal location, dimensions, seating, colors, and remedies.
The north or north-east is the best zone for the living room—these directions bring in light and positive energy. The east is also favourable. Avoid the south-west for the main living area (that zone is better for the master bedroom). Keep the north-east part of the room open, well-lit, and clutter-free; avoid heavy furniture or storage there.
A minimum of about 12×18 feet works for a small living room; 15×20 feet for a medium one; and 20×25 feet or more for a large hall. Ensure enough natural light and air flow. Rectangular shapes are preferred; avoid odd or cut corners where possible.
Place sofas and chairs so that when seated, people face east or north where possible. Heavy furniture (sofas, cabinets) can go along the south or west walls. Keep the centre of the room relatively open. Do not block the main door or north-east with large pieces.
Use light, welcoming colors: white, cream, beige, light yellow, or light green. These keep the space open and positive. Avoid very dark or heavy shades in large areas. A small water feature or plants in the north-east can enhance the zone if the layout allows.
If the living room cannot be in the north or north-east, ensure it is well-lit and ventilated. Use mirrors on the north or east walls to reflect light (avoid reflecting the main door). Keep the north-east corner of the house light and uncluttered.
