Vastu for Kitchen

The kitchen in Vastu is linked to the fire element (Agni). Placing it in the right direction and positioning the stove and sink correctly can support health and prosperity. This guide covers ideal location, dimensions, stove and sink placement, colors, and remedies.

Ideal Location and Direction

The south-east corner of the house is the best place for the kitchen—it is the fire zone (Agni) in Vastu and supports cooking and vitality. The north-west is an acceptable alternative. Avoid the north-east (sacred zone, keep free of fire and fumes) and the south-west (earth zone, not suitable for kitchen). The kitchen door should ideally open from the north, east, or west; avoid a south-facing kitchen entrance where possible.

Recommended Dimensions

For small homes, a kitchen of about 8×10 feet works; for medium homes, 10×12 feet; for larger homes, 12×15 feet or more. Ensure enough space for the stove, sink, and movement. Good height and ventilation (windows or exhaust) are important for smoke and heat to leave easily.

Stove and Cooktop Placement

Place the stove in the south-east part of the kitchen. The person cooking should face east while preparing food—this is said to support digestion and positive energy. If the kitchen is in the north-west, keep the cooktop in the south-east quadrant of that kitchen. Do not place the stove directly opposite the sink; keep fire and water zones separate.

Sink and Water Placement

Place the sink in the north-east or north part of the kitchen. Avoid putting the sink in the south-east (fire and water should not clash). The refrigerator can go in the south-west or west. Store grains and dry goods along the south or west walls.

Ventilation and Windows

Windows or vents on the east or north bring in fresh air and light. A small opening or exhaust on the south can help release smoke and heat. Keep the kitchen well-ventilated and clutter-free.

Color Scheme

Use warm, light colors: yellow, light orange, cream, light green, or light brown to align with the fire element. Avoid heavy black or dark shades. Glossy, easy-to-clean finishes are practical; keep the overall tone bright and clean.

Remedies and Tips

If the kitchen cannot be in the south-east, ensure the stove is at least in the south-east part of the kitchen and the cook faces east. Use a chimney or exhaust to remove smoke. Avoid placing the pooja room or main entrance directly opposite the kitchen.
